Movie #2187 "Your Place or Mine" -- My reading of a review of this film from Rex Reed ("this film is as much fun as a root canal") was funnier than this film itself. But I don't think it was that bad. As a constant watcher of rom-coms (my favorite type of film), I know how difficult it is to come up with something different --- and this one at least tried. Here's what it tried to do --- it tried to write the story about two people finding out they are really in love by not putting them together in 90 % of the film --- say what? Even if you put America's sweetheart in as the woman ( who makes everyone she works with look good, well, maybe not Ashton Kutcher because he looks uncomfortable in this whole film), it didn't save it. Not even putting Jimmy Kimmel's nephew as her smarmy kid could save it. And not even showing landmarks of LA and NYC could save it. Not when you have a bad script already --- you can pose the "lovebirds" with no chemistry (how could they have that when they are never together! ) in bathtubs facing each other in homage to a very successful Rock Hudson/Doris Day romcom ( a film that worked!) , but with a script like this....... it just doesn't work. Oh, yes, there are a couple of laughs, esp. with her gardener Steve Zahn, her overdramatic babysitter Rachel Bloom, her glib best friend Tig Notaro, & flirtatious Shiri Appleby --- but otherwise, this falls short. Dave has watched just a couple of Hallmark movies with me (just to be nice), and he even said this one made hallmark look much better. I'd give this one a 3 out of 5 --- it isn't the worst rom com, and some of you might get something out of it, but there is so much better available --- and I expected much more from this one.
