Movie #2178 "Tar" (amazon prime) excellent acting, but way too many gaps for me --- I had to watch with a synopsis in front of me because there were so many names we needed to know and so many situations we had to guess oR assume about her..... I really didn't enjoy watching this film at all --- she was a band director, a female in a man's world, and to watch her abuse her power was a definite turn off to me --- and it isn't based on one specific person, so why not make a film about a woman conductor who has integrity and works her way to the top? I would rather watch A film like that than this one --- This film needed to impart more information to the viewer as he/she watches it, in my opinion. Otherwise, you will probably get a blog like this, from someone like me who cared very little about the major characters, and just felt bad for the little girl who could no longer spend a lot of time with her adopted mother by the end of the picture. Now, if we are to interpret the film that because of the pressure on a female in a man's world that she had some sort of mental breakdown, then maybe I would understand why she was abusive, but that's not really focussed on much in this film, unless I missed it, which is a possibility because like I said, the exposition was very little in the film and the viewer is thrown right into the middle of the story --- and the background is told is bits of flashbacks. I don't recommend it, but I appreciate the acting. 3.5 out of 5.
"TAR" R 2022 2 hours, 38 mins
Set in the international world of Western classical music, the film centers on Lydia Tar, widely considered one of the greatest living composer-conductors and the very first female director of a major German orchestra. Having achieved an enviable career few could even dream of , renowned conductor/composer Lydia Tar, the first female principal music director of the Berlin Philharmonic, is at the top of her game. As a conductor, Lydia not only orchestrates, she manipulates. As a trailblazer, the passionate virtuoso leads the way in the male-dominated classical music industry. Moreover, Lydia prepares for the release of her memoir while juggling work and family. She is also willing to take up one of her most significant challenges: a live recording of Gustav Mahler's Symphony No. 5. However, forces that even the imperious maestro can't control slowly chip away at Lydia's elaborate facade, revealing the genius's dirty secrets and the insidious, corrosive nature of power. What if life knocks Lydia off her pedestal?
