Movie #401 ........................."The Illusionist" (2010)

Movie #401 "The Illusionist" was just okay. I dragged Dave to the theatre to see it, since it is nominated for best animated film this year, and I'm here to tell you I enjoyed "Tangled" ever so much more so I'm wondering why it wasn't nominated. Boo to the academy! This one, due to its quiet, withdrawn, awkward characters (old man and a young girl who values his magic tricks)keeps an arm's length away from its audience. Even though it is beautifully fully drawn (no gimmicks here, no 3D), it is very stoic --slow --- boring in parts. And the biggest fault it has is it doesn't say enough about what is going on -----so even though it surprises and sometimes makes you laugh, it lacks meaning behind what is going on. However, it IS beautiful and there is a little charm about it. But it would be boring for kids, I think.

Oscar-nominated for Best Animated Feature, this wistful tale follows the fading fortunes of aging illusionist Tatischeff , who's forced to perform in obscure venues as his act is eclipsed by the growing popularity of rock bands. He gets an emotional lift, though, from a wide-eyed girl named Alice, who thinks he possesses magic powers. But Tatischeff's "sleight of hand" efforts to impress her with expensive gifts may lead to his financial undoing.
