Movie #1259 "Secret Life of Pets" was a movie I had great expectations for, due to its outstanding trailer this summer --- it was one of the best trailers I have ever seen. Hmmm. Movie isn't as good as the trailer, but it does have funny bits. As a whole, it is one very long chase (but then so is Finding Dory), but there are chases and there are chases......that is, the chases here seem more old school type cartoony type of chasing. So the story wasn't a charmer to me --- I found the secondary story with Kevin Hart took over halfway through, and I was bored through that --- too much screaming --- I get that he is jealous of all the pets that have owners, and that pets might think this way if left alone in the streets of NYC, but I found him annoying --- but that's me, I'm sure. The rest is cute and imaginative --- the trip through the sausage factory is something I would never have thought of (perhaps it would be a ride in universal studios in the future?) --- the film covers so many different ways dogs (& some cats!) spend on their own waiting for their human friends to come home from.....wherever they go during the day! Being dogs, their characters are pretty shallow, but there are some cats to balance that out a bit ---- The music is what I really enjoyed in the film --- and there were so many french names in the credits (like the head of music) that I looked into why, and found out that this is just one of many films now sharing animation work with our friends in France --- I wondered what "he who must not be named" would think about that!!!! Would I recommend this for a kid? Sure. There's nothing disgusting about it --- if he/she likes cartoons, should like this. Imaginative --- I just think working with the shallow characters there's not much to do but to have them chase around. But that's an adult point of view. I'd give it 3 stars out of 5.
