Movie #3412 "Instruments of a Bleeding Heart" (theatre) The 4th oscar-nominated short documentary that I saw was this one --- with an adorable little japanese girl named Ayame. Last year a girl with an instrument won in the shorts category, so this might be the winner this time. However, I didn't like it as much as the "Death by Numbers" one --- but it did show a completely different culture and how it deals with their arts education, a subject near and dear to me. It deals with the subject of doling out criticism to someone trying out, another subject near and dear to me. But I thought, along with I think many others who watch this film, that they are just little kids --- and the band director came down pretty hard on this little girl when she was having trouble. You could take just looking at her that she was trying really hard, and in front o everyone he chewed her out. Then came the tears ---- quite a few. But the teacher came through and gave her the support she needed to come back the next day and try out on a different instrument -- one that was less played in the whole song, but one she could be more successful with. And the band director had a talk with her that showed he wasn't the heartless director from the opening minutes. But at the end, the "Death by Numbers" was more important of the two films to me. It hit me harder. But I would give this one a 4 out of 5 and recommend it, too.
