Movie #1377 ........................."Home Again"

Movie #1377 "Home Again" was a cute film, even though rotten tomatoes gave it in the 30 percentile (audiences are kinder and give it 60 + percent).  It's got kind of a way out story --- and the trailer doesn't make it clear so here goes (not giving anything away, though).  Reese Witherspoon newly estranged from hubby (Michael Sheehan) takes her two daughters back to the family residence in LA, film capital of the world.  Enter, three young guys, each quirky in his own way, trying to pitch their new film (one is the director, one the writer and the other the actor) but down on their luck in the money department.  So when reese offers them a short stay at her guest house they grab it.  The rest you will have to see the movie to get, but because all the actor are really capable, the romantic comedy works out pretty well --- hard to believe in some parts, but it is, indeed, watchable and cute and I do recommend it, esp if you like romantic comedies.  I went to see it to support Nancy Myers (the producer of this film, the director of films like "It's Complicated" and "Somethin's Gotta Give."  Her daughter is a new director here, but I think we will see more films from her in the future.  3.5 out of 5 stars.

Movie #1376 ........................."The Night of" ( a series - 8 episodes)

Movie #1376 "The Night of" -- we recently got a complimentary pass for a month for HBO , and we binged watched this a few nights this past week and really enjoyed it!  It focuses on a muslim who gets picked up for killing a woman, and his only defense is that he blacked out (due to drugs) and when he awakened, she was dead, with 22 stabs to her body.  He is arrested when he is found fleeing the scene, carrying a bloody knife.  Enter the lawyer, John Tuturturo, who suffers from allergies and eczema and can't even wear shoes, because it is so bad.  We follow the young guy as he changes lawyers, encounters all kinds of jail oppression until he is forced to smuggle in drugs in lieu of some sort of protection in Rikers, &  his time in court.  We found this very interesting and well acted, but it was a tad drawn out at times --- we felt, all in all, it could have been a bit shorter, but it was well done.  We'd give it 4 out of 5 stars and recommend this.

" THE NIGHT OF"   2016              8 episodes

Set in New York City, this limited series examines one murder case from many angles. With reverberations ranging from cultural to political, the case draws viewers into the investigation, the legal proceedings and the hell of Rikers Island.

Movie #1375 ........................."Leap!"

Movie #1375 "Leap!" --- I wanted to love this film so much --- the music is great, the dancing is fun, the story is okay --it keeps moving, but has detours along the way.  But there was something about it I didn't like at all --- is it possible that the acting was lame?  I know that is kind of weird to say about animation, but the actors weren't that all believable because they seemed to be pushing too much, instead of letting the characters and the story just to realistically move on from one place to the other. Too pushy -- almost as if to say, "isn't this cute?"  I didn't like that about the film.  Also, we've seen the story a lot --- girl has a dream and all she needs is people who believe in her to get it accomplished.  It's hard to believe, though, that it involves ballet, because it takes so much studying.  The film tried to show that, but  the leaps that occur in the film, dance wise,  are impossible, and that would have to be explained to a small one --- they are more symbolic "leaps" meaning taking risks.  I really think some kids will really get into this one and not notice the acting problems and the pushiness --- so I would recommend this for little kids to see --- Oh, one more thing you might want to know.  The film has two high points --- the one is a dance off and I loved, loved, loved the idea that it was dealing with dance as the deciding factor.  But the second one was the typical bad person going after the good person with some sort of weapon.  I hate that!  So that's why I only gave it a 3.5, too.  But I do think kids would like this one, and it so honors dance that i would have to recommend it.

Movie #1374 ........................."Diana, Our Mother"

Movie #1374 "Diana, Our Mother" was a documentary I watched the other night on HBO (we have it as a gift for this month), and I found it quite interesting because it was the first time the two boys, William and Harry, opened up about their mother since her death.  There were lots of photographs they went through and explained why they cherished them, and that felt like I was in the room with them --- it was in a way honoring her on her anniversary of her death.  However, I felt it was filmed in a bit of a static way, and I found myself drowsing away after a while --- maybe a bit too long?  Those were the two drawbacks  ---- otherwise, a nice tribute and a good case for proving she was one pretty great "mum".

"DIANA, OUR MOTHER"     68 minutes       2017

Movie #1373 ........................."Olive Kittredge"

Movie #1373 "Olive Kittredge" -- this miniseries (4 parts - 2 discs) is based on the book "Olive Kittredge" by Elizabeth Strout, a rather dry but effective (to me) examination of the life of a math teacher (now retired) who had some sort of effect on most of the townspeople in this small town in Maine.  She spent half of her life teaching, and the other half raising a boy and picking at him and her husband in her attempt to control most aspects of her life.  She has a great love for gardening, and occasionally for people and animals.  Is that it?  The show presents that question and several others along the way.  She is in ample hands with the actress Frances McDormand, who manages to squeeze out some humanity from this rather closed off, rigid person.  I'm not going to recommend this for everyone -- I played a section of it to my family and they found her mostly annoying and mean so they couldn't get into the show very much, so I'm not sure if it helps to have read the book and valued that some what before seeing this.  I think that is a possibility.  Also, you might like it if you don't expect to LIKE the major character and just go with the flow of the character study.  However, if you expect to like and care about the main character in the  film/show you are watching, I don't think I recommend this particular one to you.  I'd give it 4 out of 5 stars.  I find I am thinking about this one a lot more than other shows/films I have seen lately.

Movie #1372 ........................."Sing"

Movie #1372 "Sing" was a fun watch the other night with a room full of little kids and a smattering of adults.  It took a while to get into  it for me, but after I settled down to watch it, I found it quite delightful.  The story seemed secondary to all the fun cast of  characters, who happened to be cast with actors who can sing really well!!! The songs are all pretty much known and fun, also.  And the bad guy wasn't that scary at all ---- it deals with a "let's put on a show" atmosphere, and it keeps that spirit through until the end.  If you are looking for a show, esp. for kids, I'd suggest checking this one out --- it's a keeper!  I'd give it 4 out of 5 stars.  Lots of fun!

"SING"     2016      1 hour and 48 minutes    I'd give it 4 out of 5 stars

Movie #1371 ........................."Paper Man"

Movie #1371 "Paper Man" was a very different film -- when you look at the cast, it is full of very capable people but all so very different -- a strange mix:  Jeff Daniels, Emma Stone, Ryan Reynolds, and Phoebe from "Friends."  All accomplished humorists, but they just seem on varying wavelengths.    I liked the story right away -- a writer who has writer's block so his wife takes a temporary job at a local hospital (she's some bigwig doctor --very much a success, yet his one book that he published hasn't done well).  Oh one more thing about the Jeff Bridges character, and that's not giving anything away, but he has had an imaginary friend since he was a child --- enter Ryan Reynolds, Captain Hero.   This is to me a strange choice of parts for Ryan Reynolds, but like anything, he does it well and he's very convincing, and, of course, adds a lot of humor to the story.  Now, he is lonely and looking for adventure and meets Emma Stone, a young girl, whom he hires to baby sit --- however, he has no child to babysit, but they spend time together.  Don't "ew" because it isn't that at all...... but I don't want to tell anything else, in case this critique has piqued your interest to see this indie film to the end.  I liked it --- it's got a sufficient amount of quirky moments, good cast, easy storyline to follow, good message.  But not a lot of excitement --- even the high point is not that high, but it was satisfactory for me, so I recommend this indie-spirited film if you want to see these fine actors doing something a bit different than they normally do.

"PAPER MAN"     2009        1 hour and 50 min     I give it 4 out of 5 stars

Movie #1370 ........................."Dunkirk"

Movie #1370 "Dunkirk" -- I normally avoid war pictures because of the violence (as I get older, it is even harder for me to watch), but this story intrigued me because it was supposed to be inspiring (and besides, I had seen other films refer to Dunkirk, like"Atonement" which  even showed a scene taking place there)  --- I wanted to know more about it.  I'm not sure this film excelled in doling out information on the subject --- at least, to me, its weakness was in not being clear enough at times --- one actor looks like another esp. when he has oil all over his face --- maybe that's more a casting problem (many of the guys looked alike and I had trouble keeping them apart from each other)but also the story doesn't run as smoothly as it could --- the film juxtaposes a bunch of points of view and with so many stories spinning around, that method of storytelling lends itself to confusion, as well.  Anyway, I could follow most of it (or at least catch up when I momentarily got lost for a minute or two).  What the film excels in is the beautiful photography, the obvious attention to detail (Nolan's the director, so duh!)  and the moments that the emotions hit just right --- it still gives me chills to think of the one moment when the civilians boats show up --- and you can see a lot of it on Kenneth Branagh's face -- very strong and compelling -- I'd be surprised if this isn't nominated as one of the 10 best films of the year.  Yes, there are some awful tragedies that occur because it is a war film, but there is also so much good moments that are worth a strong recommendation from me to see it --- and on a big screen!  4 stars out of 5.
