Movie #440 "Knight and Day" was lots of fun to watch ---- just a bunch of fluff, but as long as you know that going into it, you might find it enjoyable. The stunts are amazing, the actors have charisma, and the story has enough humor and excitement to keep anyone awake and attentive. Of course, it is totally unbelievable, but the ride was fun and the settings and actors are all easy on the eye. Lots of action, with kisses and the wrong man (make that wo-man) theme in between, and gobs and gobs of spies/bad guys/ whatever, with expensive sun glasses! Did you expect anything else?

Movie #439 .........................."Made in Dagenham"
Movie #439 "Made in Dagenham" was, to me, a slight film, but it didn't need to be. It's no Norma Rae, that's for sure. I found it pretty tiring, hard to stay awake through mostly because there wasn't much to the story or the secondary people. I DID enjoy Bob Hoskins and Sally Hawkins, but the story wasn't more than what is said below, so it was quite the disappointment. Maybe I was expecting too much so the film appeared even more flat than it was. Whatever, if you watch this, I'd put on the subtitles (it's tough to understand the accent) and be wide awake, because I think it will challenge the eyelids.
I'd rate it 2.5 stars
Made in Dagenham
(2010) R
Sally Hawkins stars in this cheeky dramatization of the landmark 1968 labor strike initiated by hundreds of women who rebelled against discrimination and demanded the same pay as men for their work in a London automobile manufacturing plant. During one march, a banner that reads "We Want Sexual Equality" inadvertently becomes shortened to "We Want Sex." Nigel Cole directs this film that co-stars Miranda Richardson and Bob Hoskins.

Movie #438 ........................."The American"
Movie #438 "The American" was better than I thought it would be. I guess people expected it to be a Bourne Identity movie, but I didn't. I thought it would be character driven and a bit slow in pace, but tense, and it didn't miss there. A big negative I heard about it was that stuff happened in the film and people didn't know the reasons ---- I guess I'm used to seeing movies like "Inception" and "Memento" and foreign films that are more involved, because this film was pretty easy to follow. I had seen the topic before (it's based on a Japanese film) ---- older assassin (or spy) who decides after this one last job then he's out --- and you can kind of guess all the problems that will present when you want to get out and you know too much! I would have billed this more a love story, and I'm a sucker for that --- put that with some intensity, some people following him, beautiful scenery of Italy, and just beautiful photography (including closeups of George Clooney a lot) and that makes for a 3 star movie for me. I liked it, and if you are ready to sit through a little slower, quiet film, this is for you. Oh, but sit up close to the t.v. or your computer because the one big negative I had were the subtitles --- they were in white and very, very tiny. More than 1/2 I couldn't read, but you know, it really didn't matter because you could tell what was happening anyway. Dialogue was not that big of a deal in this film, and that was refreshing.
I gave it 3 stars.

Movie #436 and 437 ........................."Step Brothers" & "Due Date"
Movie #436 &437 "Step Brothers" & "Due Date" --- First time I have put two movies together, but alone, they would have each gotten a 1/2 star (lowest I've ever rated a movie in this blog) so I put them together to make 1 star. How low has comedy gone? Well, to answer that question, you can subject yourself to viewing these two representatives of comedy these days. They are both bad but in their own ways. "Step Brothers" is full of scatalogical jokes, silly prat falls, awkward moments of watching all these talented people with a stupid script to work from --- Mary Steenburgen? Richard Jenkins? Aw geez! Everyone in the film deserves much better with this cast, especially the audience. Then, there's the other film with Robert Downey, Jr. I usually like what he does, and I was with him for a bit in the film, knowing full well what was going to happen because who hasn't seen this film over and over again? It is a popular premise in comedies. But then he punches a kid in the stomach and that's funny? Not at all. This is just a mean-spirited film, and I don't care what kind of pressure either character is under. And the hot and cold changes in their characters were just annoying and made the film sillier as it went along --- I turned both of these films off midstream, and I don't recommend either? So why did I pick either of them up when I probably could have guessed they were bad? Searching for a comedy and hoping these would fit the bill. But they didn't. So we'll move on and keep searching. Something has got to happen in the comedy genre of U.S. films or we will all die from boredom!
Due Date

As Peter desperately tries to get home, he must deal with Ethan's laid-back attitude, numerous delays and several mishaps in this road trip comedy. Jamie Foxx co-stars.

Movie #435 ........................."Eagle Eye"
Movie #435 "Eagle Eye" - this film poses the question: does a movie ever have too many car chases? And the answer after seeing this one is a resounding "Yes, Yes, Yes!" Okay, the first 30 minutes are pretty good ---- hooked me in the opening, but then there's once car chases after another, after another, and then it just gets silly! I started doing something else WHILE watching, and about an hour into the film, I knew why the girl was going through all the stuff the phone voice was telling her, but I totally forgot (or was never told? might have missed it) why HE was running ---- He tried stopping several times, why didn't he just DO that! and save the viewers the time they spent watching this movie to the end --------the last scene has some nice tension, but then it did in the original it is stealing from (the high point in the Man Who Knew Too Much!) It got so silly that when Shia is beating up the sergeant of arms of the Capitol building so that he could don his uniform and save the president, I wondered why he didn't just ask the guy to do it instead, since he was better trained to do it ---- oops, that's a rational idea and so therefore doesn't belong in a film that strings one car chase after another, never allowing the viewer or the actors to stop and ask questions and think -- because thinking would only end the movie sooner! Not my kind of movie, but I'm sure exciting for some people -----rottentomatoes gave it 27 percent, and viewers 72 percent. I rest my case.

Movie #434 ........................."Case 39"
Movie #434 "Case 39" is the type of movie I don't usually watch, but I was kind of curious to see the movie that sparked the relationship between Brad Cooper and Renee Zellweger, and with the two of them in the film, I thought it would make it an edge above the others in this genre, and I think it did ---------at least I stuck with it longer than I normally would, when one of the characters is supposedly to be a demon who can break down doors, and do all kind of other disturbing things. Anyway, the acting was good and probably the only thing believable in this flick. When the attack of the hornets came out, I wanted out, but I made it to the bitter end. And I must say, the ending could have been more satisfying and rewarding to the viewer that made it through. And just a post note that Cooper and Zellweger just broke up ----here's hoping that my watching this had nothing to do with the break up!

Movie #433 ........................."Taken"
Movie #433 "Taken" is a good, solid thriller. It's kind of a reverse "Eye of the Needle" in that it's the father, not the mother, who is fighting for his daughter ---- he would do anything to get her safe and back home. It's unusual to see Liam Neeson in such a James Bond type role (shooting, killing people masterfully, driving fast cars, etc.) and it suits him ---- and it shows that you can't dismiss someone who has been retired from a job he could do well --- that he still has it in him to make an effect on the world (in this case, the bad guys), so I recommend this action thriller. Never looked at my watch through it!

Movie #432 ........................."Limitless"
Movie #432 "Limitless" was a real treat to watch --- I loved the premise, the moving camera, the creative shots (like numbers in the ceiling), the acting --- Brad Cooper finally got a good part! and even bloody violent scenes had humor in them. This is smart and its philosophy is "up with smartness" and at what cost? The only reason I didn't give it a 5 out of 5 is because there are just a couple of things that don't hang really well in the script ----- but it probably isn't noticeable, really. I really, really liked this one. Made me want to read the original story it is based on, it's just that good of an idea! And Robert DeNiro was just the whip cream and cherry on the top of the sundae for me! I'll quite now because I have more things to say; in fact, the praise might even be "limitless" ---- sorry for the pun.

Movie #431 ........................."Love Happens"
Movie #431 "Love Happens" is not correctly titled --- this title suggests a romantic comedy, but this isn't romantic or a comedy. This film is really about working through grief ---- one man's journey to come to grips with his wife's death, a man who needs to do this so he can continue to help others through their grief. I liked this ---- I think the critics were quick to discount it because it has Jennifer Anniston and it wasn't funny ------ it doesn't have to be. And she isn't in a lot of scenes ---- it's really Eckhart's film, strongly supported by Martin Sheen in a few scenes, as his dead wife's father who is also struggling through his grief. Eckhart meets this whimsical florist (anniston) who improves her vocabulary by learning a big word a day and writing that word behind pictures in the motel Eckhart is staying in. It becomes a standing joke in the movie, and perhaps a word like LUGUBRIOUS might be a better title ---- because it is about mourning, and how one man deals with it. Okay, as far as a serious movie, I did find it satisfying to watch this man grow free of the grief he has been experiencing, and free enough to maybe start on another relationship. I liked the film for that --- it took its time because it DOES take time, and I thought that was edgy about it -Good for these actors to take a chance on a script that takes its time! They probably knew it would be panned, but they did it anyway. Now that's what is called a lost cause , right, Atticus Finch?
I gave it 3 stars.

Movie #430........................."Life As We Know IT"
Movie #430 "Life As We Know IT" is an interesting premise, unbelievable and silly, but it works some of the time. She works harder in the movie than he does, and even though he is good looking , he doesn't succeed at being endearing through most of this --- he's such an ass in the opening, it's tough to forgive him ---- where does he get the heart over night? Why would she give up Josh Lucas for Josh Duhamel? That's a big question for me, and he had trouble convincing me. There's a lot left out, like how they dealt with the every day, day in and day out stuff with a baby. So overall, the movie has faults, and I'd only recommend it to you if you would choose Duhamel over Lucas. If not, don't bother.

Movie #429 ........................" The Next Three Days"
Movie #429 "The Next Three Days" was a little bit better than I thought it was going to be from the trailer, which I thought showed it all. Here are the positives: The cast (minus the kid) are all really good; the story has variations in it enough to keep you watching once it gets going --- so even though you feel you have seen this before, it's just that much different; there are some really good scenes (esp. between Crowe and Banks (usually in comedy) when they are in the lowest of times). Now the negatives? The film is toooooo dark and therefore hard to follow, esp. at first. The script could be better --- not much is said in a lot of scenes and I realize that NOt telling us his plan results in us being surprised, but they just don't tell us enough in some scenes ---- thank god I was watching this with Tammy (an alum) so that we could talk to each other in the quiet spots and put our heads together as to what he was doing ---- it takes a long time to really care about any of these people, and there is little characterization of the police force who occupy a lot of screen time. All that aside, by the end of it, we ended up liking it and appreciating what it was trying to do ---- to make us think along the way! But I'd only recommend it to you if you are willing to do that (and I DO suggest watching this with someone else).

Movie #428 ........................."Scott Pilgrim vs. the World"
Movie #428 "Scott Pilgrim vs. the World" was disappointing. I heard it was pretty good, but as I watched it, I realized quite quickly that I was not the targeted audience -----boys, age 12-30, maybe? But not me. It's cutesy, and unique from the beginning, the way it introduces the people, and the quick dialogue. But then when it set up the conflict --- that this Scott Pilgrim had to fight each of his new girlfriend's 7 exes, it became silly and very violent ---- one fight after another after another. Video Game aficionados might like this, but I found it quite boring. I wouldn't recommend this to most of you out there, but if you are a video game fan, you might like it. It IS unique; I'll give that to it!

Movie #427 "Adjustment Bureau" was a pleasant surprise, very enjoyable. The cast is competent with Damon and Blunt playing the two lovers, along with John Slattery (MadMen) and Terrence Stamp playing their supporting roles impeccably well. The story has a really good premise, and it was fun to play along with it and see it to the end. It had a little bit thriller with the chase scenes, a little blade runner (penned by the some writer Philip K. Dick), a great love story and a terrific sense of deadpan humor. Liked this one a lot --- and so did Dave.

Movie #426........................."The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman"
Movie #426 "The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman" was a very powerful movie that I missed the first time it came around. It was really a well done film, esp. Cicely Tyson's acting and the makeup and the story. The story reminded me a lot of Rosa Parks, esp. at the end, and because it covers her whole life, it has that epic truth telling feeling to it. I wasn't a fan of the narration, though, because I found it difficult to understand everything she was saying, and since I was streaming it to my computer, I don't know if I can put on subtitles so I went without. I also didn't like secondary acting --- some moments didn't ring as true as others because the acting was a bit melodramatic, but Cicely Tyson kept it grounded and in tow, and it is HER movie, since she won an academy award for it. Very poignant, and if you haven't seen it yet, it's worth a look. Liked it a lot!

(1973) TV-PG

Movie #425 ........................."The Proud and the Profane"
Movie #425 "The Proud and the Profane" is a classic that slipped by me years ago ---- I couldn't believe there was a Bill Holden movie that I hadn't seen, but I don't remember this one, so I watched it last night. I might have skipped it because he plays rather a nasty man in tis one, but his charm still surfaces occasionally. This film is a real talky one full of long 10 minute scenes or so, and there's lots of melodrama (borderline soap opera), and there is a lot of fake scrims in the background instead of the real scenery (some cringing moments); however, the film has superb acting, esp. from the secondary people (i.e.Thelma Ritter, in particular) and the characters and some moments are memorable (like the guy she meets at the end at her husband's grave --- very powerful scene. And I liked the ending moment, as well, but the getting to it was , like I said, a bit talky. Love that William Holden and Deborah Kerr, though.

Movie #424 ........................."Fish Game"
Movie #424 "Fish Game" is NOT worthy of the 2010 Bafta award; i.e. unless all the other candidates were based on Noel Coward's plays! This is a really disturbing film , but that's after 50+ minutes of film time delineating just how psychotic and angry this 15 year old girl is ---- and that's before her mother's boyfriend has sex with her (and yes, graphic scene). Then, all hell breaks loose in her life, and things get worse ---- yes, I feel sorry for her that her mother is a loser, yes, I get that her dream of being a dancer is crushed, and yes, i get the poignancy of the last scene where she finally communicates with her mom (kind of) by dancing with her in the living room ---- pitiful scene, and the last image is of her little sister in the rear view window of the car as she and a boy friend drive away from this rat trap and don't take her. The little girl begs for her to come back and yes, I wanted to throw something at the film screen! You don't need to see this one. This review hit the high spots, except for other negative things she does that I don't even want to go into.

Movie #423 ........................."Molly"
Movie #423 "Molly" was an okay movie, with some good moments, but some really melodramatic moments that bordered silly. It says it is a true story, but it's hard to believe because it plays like a female version of "flowers for Algernon." I found Elizabeth Shue's character to go in and out ---- it didn't seem consistent all the time, but then, she has a tough part because she has to go through all the changes. It was a "big" performance, so I wasn't always sold on her character. The same for the brother. I don't know if the fault was in the script or his acting (I'm thinking the script) but it wasn't always clear his motives. He seemed up and down in characterization, too. All in all, this was an okay film, but mental disabilities is a popular subject in films and handled so much better by so many others: "What's eating Gilbert Grape" and "The Other Sister, " and "Charlie" are the first three that come to mind.

Movie #422 ........................."The Nines"
Movie #422 "The Nines" is a strange one. A big plus is if you like Ryan Reynolds because he is in almost all the scenes. He plays three different guys --- one who is an actor who plays a cop, and the stress and fans are getting to him so he starts to do cocaine --- he is under house arrest and the house he is living in is owned by a writer (he plays the writer in the next scene, and in the third scene he plays the male lead in the t.v. show the writer is working on) -- if this sounds intriguing, it IS for a while, but the ending wasn't as satisfying as it could have been. Otherwise, well acted by Reynolds and Hope Davis and Melissa McCarthy (Mike and Molly on t.v.) and a very interesting film which could have had a better ending.
