Movie #3216 " Island in Between" (theater, oscar-nominated short doc, you tube) I ended up taking a lot of notes on this one because I found it fascinating about Taiwan, the titled place. Only a waterway separates Taiwan from China mainland, but huge differences exist between their countries and their long disputes. It remains a frontline for the war against communism for the Taiwanese. Taiwan since being exiled from China believes that someday with the help from the US they will take over China from communism. They broke off with China in 1949 and since then this country wants to be affiliated with US and not China. There's just a short ferry ride to China but that ride didn't exist until 2005. The guy who put this film together goes for work from Taiwan to US and to China, and he says it is easier to go from US to China than to Taiwan--- China makes the cooperation between the two places unbearable and difficult,. US feels that if Ukraine falls to Russia that China will go after Taiwan, but Taiwan still believes they will be saved from China by the US --- The ferry recently broke down from China and Taiwan, and this documentarian couldn't get this film through customs for a long time, and China is recently starting to send military planes into Taiwan space and they consider Taiwan to be their property, their province. Ironically, because there are many Taiwanese that think China would never try to annex them, they want the US to back off. I would give a 5 to this movie for the amount of info it gives; it makes us care about this tiny but very mighty and important place.
