Movie #2167 ........................."See How They Run" (movie Theatre)

Movie #2167 "See How They Run" (movie theatre)  cute film --- I don't use that word very often, but for this one I would. From the trailer I expected it to be a lot  funnier, but it was more a cozy murder mystery with some laughs and memorable characters.   I liked it but I think I would have liked it more if the pacing were quicker --- I kept thinking,"Pick up the pace" --- it gets slow down with the way Sam Rockwell is playing the ever-inebriated -or -hung -over- detective --- kind of Chaplinesque at times, in other times  kind of Chief Inspector Clouseau (when he gets his coat caught in his car and hits the car)  - but usually keeps our interest because he is so likable, even when falling over (which isn't funny any more -- i.e. drunks having problems walking, driving, putting ideas together, etc.) -- But the script is witty (eg - having Agatha Christie as a possible suspect in her own play, and her scene with the poison is one-of-a-kind) and the sets are very well done, along with the lighting......this is  a nicely shot film that takes its time to get across this mystery in homage to Christie's "Mousetrap,"  and the more you know the "mousetrap," the funnier you'll think this is.  I'd give it 3.8 and recommend it for those who like a nice cozy mystery with some laughs and a very capable cast!

Movie #2166 ........................"Aurora Teagarden: Honeymoon, Honey Murder" (Hallmark Murder/Mysteries)

Movie #2166 "Aurora Teagarden:  Honeymoon, Honey Murder" (Hallmark Murder/Mysteries) EPISODE 17, SEASON 1 - there are evidently 18 episodes of the Aurora Teagarden Murder Mystery show, and I only caught this one and 1/2 of the last one --- this is Episode 17.  If they are all like this one, it was an easy murder mystery to figure out, and I didn't have to watch it  closely at all .   They were on their honeymoon and discovered a body and spent the rest of their honeymoon running around to track down who did it --- while annoying the cop who is trying to do it alone.  I'd give it a 3, and probably should just stick to the Hallmark Christmas films --- and the list just came out, so I can hardly wait for October 21 --- the first one!

"AURORA TEAGARDEN:  HONEYMOON, HONEY MURDER"     1 HOUR AND 1/2   2021

Movie #2165 .........................."Buffaloed" (Hulu)

Movie #2165 "Buffaloed" (Hulu) So , when I wrote glowing comments about Zoey Deutsch in "The Outfit"  blog a few weeks ago, an alum recommended this film, which he thought showed off her leading lady abilities, and he was right --- she certainly carried this film!  And what an intriguing premise -- I never saw a movie on this subject (debt collecting) before, and with a central character who is difficult to cheer for, yes, she is tired of being poor so her goal is to make $ fast by manipulating people -- and yes, she's feisty -- but she really isn't stopped until her family gets affected and then, she apologizes and continues --- I'd give it 3.5 -- it is rapid in pacing,  and when it is about the finances, it is a challenge to follow, but entertaining.

"BUFFALOED"     2019      1 HOUR AND 35 MINS

In the underworld of debt-collecting, homegrown hustler Peg Dahl will do anything to escape Buffalo, NY

Director:  Tanya Wexler

Writer:  Brian Sacca

Actors:  Zoey Deutch, Jai Courtney, Judy Greer

Movie #2164........................."In Name Only" (TMC)

Movie #2164 "In Name Only" (TMC) I never saw Grant and Lombard paired together in a film, so that made me want to watch this when I saw it being shown on TMC.  I'm glad I did because they are both so good at what they do --- Even though the story is a bit thin, it was a good portrait of how arranged marriages for the upper class can get sticky when you find your soulmate out of your class.  Kind of maudlin at times, but on the whole well worth the watch.  Maybe the film  could have used a bit more humor infused in it because I know they both have great comic ability!  But  I'd give this a 4.

"IN NAME ONLY"          1939       1 HOUR AND 34 MINS

After a wealthy man finds out his wife is a gold digger, he meets and falls for a widowed mother, and complications ensue.

Director:  John Cromwell

Movie #2163 ........................."Elvis" (hBO)

MOVIE #2163 "ELVIS" (HBO) Baz Luhrmann films are  always entertaining and busy to me ---with  rapid editing --- lots of music, camera busy and sets decorated , big and bawdy... but as a result, sometimes the story telling comes across a bit scattered (that happened in "Moulin Rouge" with me, too) -- Then, there's Tom Hanks; I get that his character is important, and the film suggest he's the Satan, but not sure it was the best casting --- he certainly wasn't the best thing in the movie, and sometimes he was  kind of a distraction because he seemed fake to me --- at those times it reminded us we weren't watching the real Elvis, and that's too bad because this kid was great!  He really, really was.  And it didn't look like he was mimicking Elvis, either.  He did his own rendition of Elvis, and I greatly appreciated that interp.  The movie made me feel very sorry for Elvis, and that's a big deal because I never really cared for him.  I'd give this a 4.

"ELVIS'        2022               PG-13              2 HOUR AND 39 MINUTES

Movie #2162 ........................."Bad Seed Returns" (Lifetime)

Movie #2162 "Bad Seed Returns" (Lifetime)  Ugh!  worse than the first one --- just one silly set up for  death or injury  after another ---and the ending was the worst!  Because there's more to come!?

"THE BAD SEED RETURNS"    lifetime               2022      1 hour and 28 mins

Movie #2161 ........................."The Bad Seed" (2018) - Lifetime

Movie #2161 "The Bad Seed" (Lifetime)  --- oh my.  I am not a horror picture enthusiast by any means, but I always had an interest in the whole bad seed idea from the original "Bad Seed " movie with Patty McCormick.  The idea addressed  in that film was that once in a while the psychotic tendency can be inherited -- well, at least in Rhoda's case.      There are huge differences, though, between  this new show  and the old one --- but one huge similarity --- that of Patty of McCormick, who plays  the little girl  Rhoda in the original,  and now plays  the therapist for the little girl in the modern one  (this version her name is Emma - too nice of a name in my opinion) .  That was a nice touch --- too bad,the good parts stopped there.  This  actress  McKenna Grace is AMAZING as Emma --- she is sooooo much more believable than Rhoda from the earlier film --- but come on!  After a couple of accidental deaths, someone has to catch on.  The story is ridiculous --- but this is me writing it after I have just watched "The Bad Seed Returns" --- To me, believability could be stretched through one long picture with poetic justice occurring at the end of the first  1950s film --- that end is one of the best in film history, and I won't divulge it here, but you'd think if you picked up this project, with this great little girl acting rings around everyone else that you could come up with a fitting poetic justice ending and have it occur in a reasonable amount of time !!!!..............well, maybe it will occur in the next version?  But me?  if a third one comes out, I am going to just fly fast through to the end to see what they come up with --- the rest of the stuff in between is just horror with little thought --- but then again, I am NOT a horror fan. I give this a 3 --- I hope to see McKenna in more good stuff in the future (see "Gifted" for an intro to her abilities)

"THE BAD SEED"    2018     Lifetime t.v. movie      1 hour and 27 mins

Stars:  Rob Lowe, McKenna Grace

Movie #2160 ........................".CURIOUS CATERER: DYING FOR CHOCOLATE" (Hallmark Channel)

Movie #2160  "Curious Caterer:  Dying for Chocolate" (Hallmark Channel)  Not much to watch last night while working on the computer so I checked out the Hallmark Channel (early for me --- usually, just at xmas time I check in)  and I noticed this mystery --- It had two of my favorite xmas Hallmark stars:  Nikki Deloach and Andrew Walker, so I thought this might be one of the better ones --- I was wrong about that!  The mystery was weakly set up  with silly goings on--- for example,  no apparent reason why the detective would follow her to a restaurant when she's on a date(that's just silly, or obvious foreshadowing that he cares about her, but then that's embarrassing for him: what is he thinking?)  and that's just one example --- I picked out the murderer after the really lengthy list of possibilities got introduced --- there were some cringeworthy scenes that were here ,and one big one was the very last.  I had fallen asleep  because it was so run-of-the-mill (and I was tired) and I woke up to "Murder She Wrote" theme, so I backed up (I had taped it just in case) and watched the last 30 minutes this time with my eyes opened and oh my --- the very end was the only real mystery --- I was left with :  what were they thinking?  I give it a 2.5 --- maybe someone might like it, but this viewer didn't.

"CURIOUS CATERER:DYINF FOR CHOCOLATE"  (Hallmark) 1 hour and 24 mins     2022   t.v. movie

Movie #2159 ........................."Only Murders in the Building - season 2 (Hulu)

Movie #2159 "Only Murders in the Building" (Season 2 - Hulu)  We so enjoyed Season 1, and it ended with the possibility of another murder , so we anxiously awaited Season 2 and just finished watching that (looks like there might be a 3?) This one, while re-using characters introduced in Season 1 (like Nathan Lane, Tina Faye,  and Amy Ryan) gives some additional people (Michael Rapaport, Shirley MacLaine) and switches Sting out and brings Amy Shumer in -- the podcast continues, the fans continue, the mystery continues, and there's more backstory on each of the main 3 characters:  Gomez, Short and Martin.  This murder mystery was a bit more scattered than the first one, while having more possible murderers to choose from.  The ending wasn't as satisfying as Season 1, but still the journey is lots of fun with the cast and what they bring to each scene they are in.  I'd give this one a 4, too, even though the ending wasn't to my liking.

"ONLY MURDERS IN THE BUILDING"  (Season 2 - hulu)  11 episodes   each about 30 minutes

Actors:  Steve Martin, Martin Short, Selena Gomez

Movie #2158 ........................."Destination Wedding" (netflix)

Movie #2158 "Destination Wedding" (netflix)  Now for something completely different...... when I saw that Keanu Reeves was in a rom-com with Winona Ryder, I had to check it out --- didn't expect much at all.  This is kind of funny because it's like they aren't acting -- I kept thinking "What script"?  They are both so, I don't know how to put it, laid back?  smarmy?  pretentious snoots?  The vocabulary is very highbrow ---- their observations are consistently mean and inappropriate --- to each other and wow!  when they attack others..... there's lots of negativity --- yep, that's it --- they are both HUGE NAYESAYERS --- so you can either turn it off, or keep watching to see just how bad it gets, and where it goes from there...........that's what I chose.  Am I the better for it?  I doubt it, but some people will welcome this film because they don't like Hallmark stuff, so this is it!  The Real Stuff!  People without any filter going to a wedding they both don't want to be at --- making snide  comments about this one's personality, or the fatness of another....inappropriate right and left --- I laughed , but it was a laugh like:  I- can't -believe- they -said- that!  kind of laugh.  I'd give it a 3 --- not my kind of love story, but a lot of people's , for sure.

"DESTINATION WEDDING"      1 hour and 27 mins     R    2018

The story of two miserable and unpleasant wedding guests, Lindsay and Frank, who develop a mutual affection despite themselves.

Director:  Victor Levin

Movie #2157 ........................."Hello, Goodbye, and Everything In Between" (Netflix)

Movie #2157 "Hello, Goodbye, and Everything in Between" (Netflix) - Still another movie to watch while walking........ I am always interested in young love, and this is at its best --- two seniors decide to date just during their senior year, and then break it off before they go off to college or whatever their individual dreams takes them to .  They both agree, but not sure about it -- seems too easy.  The guy decides a few days before the end of senior year to break off the plan --- he thinks she is his soulmate --- she doesn't want to break off from their plan  because of baggage she is carrying around --- this movie  has, in my opinion, a very good ending, esp. for the young --- great message.  But the reason I would give it 3.5 is that it tries sooooo hard at times --- esp. in the opening.  I almost turned it off --- the two appear just too cute to believe --- he's Jordan Fisher and likable already, so he doesn't have to try as hard as he does...........but when the film settles them down, they become more real, and that's when the film works.  It's just those "too cutesy" parts that get in the way at times.

"HELLO, GOODBYE, AND EVERYTHING IN BETWEEN"  1 hour and 22 mins.    2022

After making a pact to break up before college, Claire and Aidan retrace the steps of their relationship on one last epic date, revisiting familiar and unexpected places as they question:  stay together or say goodbye forever?

Actors:  Jordan Fisher, Talia Ryder, Ayo Edebiri

Movie #2156 ........................."Purple Hearts"(netflix)

Movie #2156 "Purple Hearts" (netflix)  Another film I watched during my walk was this one --- very different for me --- a rather involved love story --- not Halmarkian because of all the flaws involved.... and it was uneven but had good points.  I have seen ptsd films involving war (even in Hallmark films) but they seem not as believable as this one --- It dealt with the messiness of all involved (thus the title "purple hearts" ) , and that storyline drew me in --- Even the ending isn't pretty, but it was satisfying to me.   I'd give this one a 4 , too, but very few laughs --- nice, capable cast, though.

"PURPLE HEARTS"  2 hours and 2 mins.     2022

In spite of their many differences, Cassie, a struggling singer-songwriter, and Luke, a trouble Marine, agree to marry solely for military benefits.  But when tragedy strikes, the line between real and pretend begins to blur.

Director:  Elizabeth Allen Rosenbaum

Writers:  Kyle Jarrow, Liz W. Garcia

Actors:  Sofia Carson, Nicholas Galitzine, Chosen Jacobs

Movie #2155 ........................."Set It Up" (netflix)

Movie #2155 "Set It Up" (netflix)  I think this is the best of the bunch, so I started with it first --- I kept going by this one -- I was intrigued with the cast, but it sounded so Hallmarkian, and to me that's saved for Christmas.  However, the other day  I was looking for something good to watch during my nightly  walk,  and this fit the bill ---  and I'm so happy, because it renewed my interest in the lead girl, Zoey Deutch (whom I had respected in the recent movie "Outfit" with Mark Rylance - still one of the best films of 2022).  So the storyline deals with two disgruntled personal assistants (like Anne Hathaway in "Devil Wears Prada") who have a meet -cute getting delivery food for their bosses and decide that if their bosses had a romance, it would give them more individual time to be on their own --- and a quicker way to move up the food chain, so to speak.  Besides, they have all the power in that they run their bosses' calendars, i.e. lives.  So they pencil in cute meet -ups for their bosses, little gifts to each other, set up phone calls, and are able to be quite successful because they know all their details (like favorite foods, likes/dislikes, etc.)  Sounds crazy, right?  if you watch though, the two leads are pretty convincing in their earnestness ---- what I liked esp. about the film was the messy (non Halmarkian)  ending --- I don't want to say any more, but one of the major ways I judge rom-coms is if the conflict that occurs halfway to three quarters of the way through the film  needs to be convincing and not manufactured ,and I thought this one worked.  I give this a 4 because it's funny, has good chemistry in the two leads and their bosses,  and an unexpected turn by Pete Davidson who  in a small part does a Bill Murray-like job with it!

"SET IT UP"  1 hour 45 minutes     2018

Two young assistants in NY city realize they can make their lives easier by setting up their workaholic bosses to date.  While trying to perpetuate this romantic ruse between their nightmare bosses, the assistants come to many realizations along the way .  (can you guess what one of them is?)

Director:  Claire Scanlon

Writer:  Katie Silberman

Actors:  Zoey Deutch, Glen Powell, Lucy Liu, Taye Diggs

Movie #2154 ........................."Bad Education" (netflix dvd)

Movie #2154 "Bad Education" (netflix dvd)  For the longest time this film was in my queue labelled that I had seen it and gave it a 4.  Well, my queue must be a mindreader because I am giving it a 4, but I hadn't seen it before.  This is a must see for Hugh Jackman fans because it really shows off what he can do --- he is so charming while being a not-such-a-good-guy in the education world.  This story is based on a true story about the most money embezzled in the land of Education (Betsy Devos, where were you?) by a superintendent and his co-worker, played by Allison Janney (she's always good).  This film has what I would term a "wild" tone --- never settling on one; asa result, sometimes you are sitting in horror, while others you are laughing.  It's serious business bilking a school system, but then the people who are so involved seem to be doing a good thing for the school system --- but is it worth your integrity?  your soul?  On the surface, the superintendent seems concerned about the students, the parents, the schools in his district, but under the surface there are so many secrets he is hiding..... What occurs will make you sick, but the way the story unfolds and what Jackman and Janney and other supporting people (shout out to Annaleigh Ashford, one of our favorites!) do for the film, will entertain and engross you in this film.

"BAD EDUCATION"  1 HOUR AND 48 MINS            2019

The beloved superintendent of New York's Roslyn School District and his staff, friends and relatives become the prime suspects in the unfolding of the single largest public school embezzlement scandal in American history.

Director:  Cory Finley

Writers:  Mike Makowsky (screenplay) Robert Kolker (magazine article "The Bad Suerpintendent")

Actors:  Hugh Jackman, Allison Janney, Ray Romano

Movie #2153 ......................."The Accountant" (on t.v./on demand)

Movie #2153 "The Accountant" (on t.v./on demand)  I was roaming the channels the other night and came across this title, which had been recommended to me a while ago, so I gave it a whirl.  I found this film very intriguing from the get-go.  I have to admit it took me a while to understand what was going on because of a very quiet, aspergian lead character (Ben Affleck) and the constant use of flashbacks to when he and his brother were young.  This is a very different part for Affleck -- for any actor it would be challenging, not being able to use his face or eye contact or whatever is missing here due to his being on the spectrum .  But after a while, I got hooked into the why's....why is he rubbing his leg?  why does he play music so loudly?  why is he treating the greedy bad guys a certain way?  etc.  All are answered, and then some by the end of the film, and the voyage was full of turns along the way --- it's just not a normal movie --- in that, it takes chances, and I respect that.  I'd give it a 4, and I heard the director plans on some continuation of these characters in a couple more movies.  Stay tuned.

"THE ACCOUNTANT"    2016              2 hours and 8 minutes                 R

Director:  Gavin O'Connor

Writer:  Bill Dubuque

Actors:  Ben Affleck, Anna Kendrick, J.K.Simmons

Movie #2152 ........................."Mrs. Pollifax --Spy" (Amazon Prime)

Movie #2152 "Mrs. Pollifax -- Spy" (Amazon Prime)  Our book club read this book and really enjoyed it, so I thought I'd hunt up the movie made from the book.  This one, the oldest with Rosalind Russell, is available free on Amazon Prime, and it was cute.  It followed the book quite a bit except for where it started and how she got into the spy business in the first place ---funnier in the book.  But once the story starts taking off, it's jam- packed action with Mrs. P (following the book) ,  who is played by the wonderful actress (Rosalind Russell)  with tons of nuances added  to the character.  The young spy she works with is played by Darrin McGavin, and he's very funny and laid back, playing the guy, in my opinion, perfectly from the book.  The extra prisoner who helped them in the book never shows up in this film ;  otherwise, the plot is pretty much the same.  I'd give it a 3 and rate it a fun watch, esp. if you have read the book (which is better than a three!)

"Mrs. Pollifax ---- Spy"      1 hour and 49 minutes       1971

A bored widow looks for excitement  and finds it when she begins working for the CIA.

A widowed New Jerseyan woman volunteers for spy duty at the CIA, being in her own opinion, expendable now that the children are grown, and is assigned to pick up a book in Mexico City, while finding out that it is easier said than done.`

Director:  Leslie H. Martinson

WRITERS:  Rosalind Russell (screenplay) , Dorothy Gilman (book:  "Unexpected Mrs. Pollifax"

Actors:  Rosalind Russell, Darren McGavin, Nehemiah Persoff

Movie #2151 ........................."Hustle" (netflix)

Movie #2151 "Hustle" (Netflix)  As much as I don't like or seek out Adam Sandler movies, I have to admit this was a good one --- it was recommended as a good biopic, and I agree.  I don't usually watch sporting movies, but once in a while there's one that comes along that I get drawn into.  What makes this one a bit different from say "Jerry Maguire" (another one I thoroughly enjoyed but that one was because of all the actors involved and the love story aspect of it) is that it deals with recruiting very young prospects for basketball (Jerry Maguire was football -- ugh!  and lavish shopping for the next Manning -- higher stakes, so way beyond my interest because I feel too much money is at stake while poor people are starving --- sorry, I digress) Anyway, because it deals with younger guys, and a sport I don't mind watching, I think I liked it --- and  it seems Sandler works harder  when his compadres he usually works with for his silly comedies aren't being used .  The characters  here are interesting, the conflict seemed real, and it drew me in.  I give it a 4 and recommend it to watchers who enjoy a good  sport biopic with some basketball playing mixed with some angst.

"HUSTLE"   1 hour and 57 minutes      2022    R

After being fired, pro basketball scout, Stanley Sugerman, is excited, for the first time in a very long while, when he serendipitously discovers Spanish amateur baller, Bo Cruz, playing in a park outside Madrid. Fueled with new-found purpose, Stanley makes it his mission to groom Bo for the NBA as he believes they both can make it.

Director:  Jeremiah Zager

Writers:  Taylor Materne, Will Fetters

Actors:  Adam Sandler, Queen Latifah, Juancho Hernangomez

Movie #2150 ........................." Derek DelGaudio's In and Of Itself" (netflix)

Movie #2150 "Derek DelGaudio's In and Of Itself" -- Wow!  This is a must see for many people because not only is it entertaining and intriguing but such a think piece!  A little backstory.....Alums recommended it (Thanks to Mike and Karen for finding this one!) , Stephen Colbert and his wife produced it, Frank Oz (Miss Piggy and a great director) directed it, and it was a one-man show off Broadway for 500+ shows and this is an amalgam of those theatre experiences.    That being said, we went into this not knowing anything else, and that's why this blog won't say much more --- I think the word for it is ineffable -- unexplainable --- if I tried to, I risk ruining the experience for you, so I thought you should see it on recommendation .  A couple years ago I had a like feeling when I watched "Nanette" (Hannah Gadsby) And although it is on different subjects, for sure, they are similar in the emotional impact the presentation had on me.  And I would love to talk to people about it, so if you do see it (or have seen it) and you want to have a more in- depth disc about it, please message me, or let me know here and I will message you.  But if you make comments under this blog, please don't give anything away about it.  There's something sacred in that.  I wish I would have seen the live show, but I had never heard about it.  Now you've heard about it,  see if you want to watch it.  I think most of you will think it is quite amazing.  I give it a 5 out of 5.

"DEREK DELGAUDIO'S IN AND OF ITSELF"    2020    1hr and 30 mins

Storyteller and conceptual magician Derek DelGaudio attempts to understand the illusory nature of identity and answer the deceptively simple question "Who Am I?"

Director:  Frank Oz

Writer:  Derek DelGaudio

This is what is written on IMDB:

"Please go in without reading up on what you are about to see. Turn off your devices, make sure you won't be interrupted, and just experience it. If your partner/housemate/friend is a chatty show watcher, watch it alone."

It's hard to write a review that doesn't tell you anything, but I think it's quite important not to know what to expect. It can be a deeply moving experience.
