Movie #1405 "Victoria & Abdul" -- I found this movie quite enjoyable. And audiences have agreed with me, for the most part, scoring about 74% on rottentomtoes.com (in comparison to the 60+ % that the critics have given it --- why? because some find it spoofing a serious subject (the treatment of the Muslims at the time) I found it topical. As long as you aren't taking all the history as factual --- and the film is up front about that with the opening disclaimer -- "mostly true" --- I was unable to watch anything in the film other than the two of the people -- SHE because she's Judi Dench and at her best finest here (or any time she gets to play a Queen!) and HE because he is so charming........and authentic and genteel. I loved the whole idea of Queen Victoria upsetting her entire household and family because of this relationship with her "servant' -- and when told she can't do that, instead of dropping the relationship, she makes him part of her inner circle! It's a story that needed to be told, and if it's twisted a bit to make the movie better, that's okay with me -- I knew I wasn't watching the history channel. This is Queen Victoria toward the end of her life, and I always find this particular queen quite interesting --- and Judi playing her, makes it doubly so for me! What I wanted to see more of, is more info on Abdul, more about his family, more from him verbally , just overall. Otherwise, it was a delightful film that we (Dave's folks, 89 years oldsters) all enjoyed!!! I give it 4 out of 5 stars, and highly recommend this gem!
P.S. do I dare suggest that this might be an academy award nod for Ms. Dench?
