Movie #989 ........................."Storm Center"

Movie #989 "Storm Center" was on TCM early this a.m. when I couldn't get back to sleep and I hadn't seen it before (surprise!  Surprise!  I thought I saw all of Bette Davis' repertoire) so I watched it.  I found it surprisingly very relevant, what with the censorship issue in the news just this past week ("Interview"  A Seth Rogen movie about bumping off the  North Korean dictator).  Even though the music and acting was a bit overwrought, and many of the characters one-dimensional, I enjoyed the story playing out to the end.  I hadn't seen a movie just on this subject so I was trying to guess how it would end, and I'm happy to say that it ended satisfactorily for me.  Davis never lets up in here (I don't think I saw her smile once), but she has a great relationship with the kids in the town and as head librarian of the Public Library (ah, the good old days!)  she wields some power and has an important place in the local scene, and that was intriguing to me, as well.

Storm Center     1959     98 minutes         I'd give it 3.5 stars out of 5

A small-town librarian is branded as a Communist by local politicians when she refuses to withdraw a controversial book from the library's shelves.
