At the start of a new school year, Sarah Daniels (Sarah Jessica Parker) -- the dean of students at a prestigious Vermont college -- finds herself thrust into intense racial politics in the aftermath of a string of campus hate crimes. While university administrators (Miranda Richardson and James Rebhorn) try to downplay the issue, an investigative reporter (Mykelti Williamson) helps Sarah get to the bottom of things in this potent drama.
Movie #41 ---- read this play a while a go and liked it so much I then lent it to my husband and to my father-in-law. I've been a fan of playwright Rebecca Gillman for a while, so when I heard this film was made, I put it on my netflix list immediately. I'm also a fan of Sarah Jessica Parker ("Sex in the City") and I think she's been improving as she has been aging, so I was excited to see this one. I have to admit that the 3 is for the very slow opening..............and the confusing tone ------ it didn't seem to know where it was going at first, but the last half is really a satisfactory ending ------- if you rent this, and I'm not sure you have to, don't expect a lot of action at all -------- it's very thin. But the discussions, esp. the last ones with 1) the black journalist and teacher 2) the teacher and the administration, and 3) the black student and the administrative body are all well done --- and they sure make you think about how we say we aren't racist, but are we right? It's worth the discussions ------ but I think the play was better.
