As a young boy, Dieter Dengler watched as Allied planes destroyed his village; from that instant, he knew he wanted to fly. At 18, he moved to America, enlisted in the Navy and was promptly shipped to Vietnam. During one of his first missions, however, Dengler was shot down over Laos and taken prisoner; although he escaped and returned home, the experience still haunts him. Werner Herzog directs this affecting documentary.
Movie #39 was a very different movie. I would liken it to "Touching the Void" --- and if you have seen that, it recreates a mishap on a mountain climbing expedition WITH the same people it happened to --------amazing photography and amazing that the two guys went through it again............for the camera. Well, Dieter, a pow during the Viet Nam war, tells us his story and as he tells it, The esteemed director (Herzog ) puts shackles on him, has him walk with Vietnamese actors at gun point through the same exact places that he was a prisoner in ------it's an amazing story (that he survived all the torture) and the telling is very unique. That's all there is to this documentary, so it might not be you cup of tea, but I liked it because it was different.
