Movie #1652 "Roma" --- well, I must say, this movie did not reach my expectations, but then the bar was high, considering it has some some 90+ film awards so far this year, and it is nominated for tomorrow's Golden Globe awards, and don't be surprised if you hear its name announced. You can stream it for free on netflix if you are a member, and see what you think, but I was a bit disappointed. Oh, it's a good film, but not anything to me like what people are saying about it. It's not even "Green Book" which I am blogging on next. Many of the images are beautifully photographed in black and white, and I get that, (and not surprised for the cinematography nods) but screenplay? best film? best editing? hmmmmmm. One big beef I have with it is the slow pacing, and the other is story --- I wanted to get more info on what was going on politically in Mexico City in the 1970s. Oh yeah, there's one scene where she is trying to buy a crib and the shopping is greatly interrupted by a bunch of young men running in with guns pointed at them. It was always in the background, but it seems to be it would be more in the foreground of my life if this happened to me. Anyway, I looked it up while watching the film (God knows how much you could look up and learn with the slow pacing) , so I know a little bit more, but the ending seemed poignant for the end of a scene, but not for the end of the rather lengthy film. I would give this a 3.8 out of 5, but best film? not convinced.
"ROMA" 2018 2 HOURS and 15 minutes
