Movie #1014 ........................."Game Change"

Movie #1014 "Game Change" was on HBO today, and we just happen to have it this month in Arizona, and we got the chance to see this gem of a film today instead of melting at the pool in 98 degree weather.  Anyway, it's based on the third part of the  book by the same name, written by the people who worked on the McCain/Palin campaign  in the 2008 presidential election --- from McCain getting the nod as the candidate, picking Palin after only vetting her for 5 days, dealing with all that she doesn't know, coaching her to memorize scripts of talking points for the debates and interviews (after bombing the Couric one), and through the making of a Frankenstein by building her up and giving her confidence, to severing ties with her when the ticket lost.  The actors are might fine here, including :  Julianne Moore, who won an emmy for this portrayal (she even has her walk), Woody Harrelson as Steve Schmidt, Sarah Paulson as Nicole Wallace, and  Ed Harris as John McCain.  I never got bored with the story, found it comical at times, and it answered some questions I had as to why McCain chose her, what was she really liked behind closed doors, etc.  You'd think it was anti-Palin, but the movie does point out the charisma and acting ability the woman has, so it isn't a completely horribly painted picture of her.  And McCain comes across the way I pictured he would be --- wanting to keep the integrity in the campaign but finding that very difficult. There's also a side issue on how we get our  news has changed through the years..

Game Change

2012 TV-MA 118 mins
I give it 4 stars out of 5
Based on the best-selling nonfiction book, this political drama follows the historic 2008 presidential race with a focus on the sometimes contentious relationship between Republican nominee John McCain and his running mate, Sarah Palin.

Movie #1013 .........................."Love Is Strange"

Movie #1013 "Love is Strange" is definitely a movie about family dynamics with a loved one, a relative, who moves back in to share your house with your family ----  for example, how the aging uncle wants to talk to you while you are working from home.  .  The gay marriage is actually a small issue in the film --- yes, it gets Ben fired (he teaches music at a catholic school), but really, you forget Ben & Geoare gay, and that's what is good about the film.  They act the same as any couple who are forced to live separately after being so close for 25+ years.  And to top that, they are aging quickly.  Those factors go into the way they affect the dynamics of the families they live with.  It's a very sad, delicate story handled so well by the lead and secondary actors.  A nice character study on a beautiful relationship.  The pacing is a bit slow, and there could be a little bit more action for me, otherwise, well done.

Movie #1012 ........................."Cinderella"

Movie #1012 "Cinderella" is a movie that I would recommend kids to see, and it isn't bad for us adults, either.   In fact, it has a very strong theme (says it about 5 times:  you should have courage and kindness)for all, and in that way, it stands out midst all the slop that kids could be watching.  Director Branagh makes a lot of good decisions here --- in casting, he's right on to put Lily James in the title role --- she exudes energy, freshness, excitement and goodness in every breath she breathes.  And Cate Blanchett is a wow here!  The story still has the "evil" stepsisters and stepmother bullying Ella around, but there's a reason for her submitting to it --- it is said in dialogue that she wants to keep the house in the family to please her now dead parents.  The story still has the magical fairy godmother --- this case has Helena Bonham Carter (who was cute, but could have been funnier, I thought).  The story still has prince charming, but in this case, when referred to as "prince charming" he says he is just "a" prince and when he sees her, yes, she's beautiful but she's "so much more" --- I liked the changes there!  In every way, our Cinderella here takes courage to be a role model who supports the forgiving, kinder route to take with everyone --- at one point she thanks the man who brought her the sad news of her dad's death by saying, "that must have hurt you, too, so much!"  How kind!  And because she is so much so, we root for her as she goes to the dance, wins over everyone with her dance stealing abilities, and then as she dashes past the king (since  the clock is striking midnight) she is able to show kindness again by telling him how much the prince loves him --- a message he takes to heart and uses later to give advice to his son to follow HIS heart.  I liked the changes, but I wish there were even more ---- I still think searching for Cinderella by trying the magic shoes on the women is a bit silly, but then, to someone new to the story, there would be such a void, probably, if it weren't there.  And I wish she could have gotten the prince's attention more wisely, than just singing loudly in her locked attic bedroom, but then when he finally sees her, she tells him before she tries on the shoe (played anticlimatically here, which is ok with me)  she hopes he will take her as she is  --- nice touch there.  That's why she lives happily ever after --- she deserves it, not because she is pretty, but because she believes in courage and kindness.  And that's a nice motto to follow, even if it is said at least 5x throughout the film!

Cinderella

2015 PG
I would give it 4 out of 5 stars.

Movie #1011 ........................."Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel"

Movie #1011 "Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel" is not quite as good as the first one, but it still is a lot of fun to watch all these very very capable actors.  Once again, the focus is on how vital, busy and entertaining the senior part of our lives can be. The film follows the soon-to-be wedding of Dev Patel to his girlfriend from the first movie, but also his plans to expand the hotel to another close by.  In addition, Richard Gere adds to the mix as a novelist who tries to Woo Dev Patel's hard to please mother.  Judi Dench is still on the fence about Bill Nighy pursuing her, and Maggie Smith is as curmudgeoning as ever, if that's a word.  The last movie had lots of poignant moments mixed with humor, and the same is here, although some of it seems a bit contrived or drummed up to keep the story going --- the editing seems a bit frenetic, moving swiftly back and forth from one member of the cast to the other, all with the wedding as a backdrop to get to what I thought was a good ending.   i found this quite winning, the cast superb, and the plot satisfactory.  I do recommend it, and I am sorry that it probably won't have a third in the series.

I'd give it 4 out of 5 stars

Movie #1010 ........................"Results"

Movie #1010 "Results" was an uneven film, but very creative and funny in parts.  Perhaps Kevin Corrigan is an actor one warms up to, but I didn't find him very funny ---- he was odd, and slow in delivering his lines, and he did get across the characters, but it just wasn't an interesting one to me, in comparison to Guy Pearce who always seems to deliver a passionate characterization in whatever he is cast in , and Cobie Smulders, who is very good as the guru personal trainer.  The film meanders A LOT, and it turns out to be a very strange rom com, but I enjoyed most of the journey it takes you on through the world of "working out"!

I'd give it 3 out of 5 stars

Movie #1009 ........................."Where Hope Grows"

Movie #1009  "Where Hope Grows" is quite an inspiring film with the main character who has Downs syndrome.  It has some tough scenes to watch , too, mostly concerning a very wise teenage daughter who has to keep picking  up her alcoholic father from the local jail.  I felt there were a tad too many stories here (sub stories with messages about bullying, teenage sex, baseball and fame, etc.) and the film could have been shorter, but all in all, quite enjoyable and it teaches TOLERANCE, a lesson we never can be taught enough of .

Where Hope Grows

2015 PG-13

I would give this movie 3.5.
After chronic anxiety attacks bring a premature end to Calvin Campbell's professional baseball career, he spirals into depression -- until he begins an unlikely friendship with a young supermarket clerk who has Down syndrome.

Movie #1008 .........................Wildlike

Movie #1008 "Wildlike" was never boring, very action packed.  Below tells pretty much the synopsis, so I'll just add what I liked and didn't like.  I enjoyed the young girl, her acting, and her repartee with more seasoned actor Bruce Greenwood.  And it was nice to see him in the starring role here!  The story was easy to follow and quite captivating, not to mention all that beautiful Alaska scenery!  What I didn't like is the sex scenes ---- there were only 3, and they didn't show much at all (thank goodness, because the lead was only 15 years old) but they were very uncomfortable.  Good movie, all around, thought!

Movie #1007 ........................."Half Brother"

Movie #1007 "Half Brother" was the second movie I saw in the Phoenix Film Festival 2015, and it was quite good.   I found out in a Q & A with the director that it was shot in 16 days, but I was praising the cinematography and esp. the editing! I also found it quite gutsy to tackle this subject --- the effects divorce has on not only the immediate family, but the step children, as well.  Here Michael goes home to seek support from his "family" after his girlfriend dumps him for another guy, and he loses his job and apartment as a result.  But when he gets "home" he finds it in turmoil, and that he ends up working through his "grief" by helping them with theirs. It's a sticky story, but it is handled with humor and reality, and I really liked it and recommend it!

Movie #1006 ........................."Bread & Butter"

Movie #1006 "Bread and Butter" was the first movie we saw for the Phoenix film festival 2015, and it was a winner.  If you like awkward romantic comedies, this is for you, because it truly is an indie film, waiting for a long time for people to say their next lines because they are soooooooo nervous.  The lead woman is terrific in showing how much conflict she is in , trying to make a choice between two possible "lovers" --- one is a patient of her life coach boss (played by SNL Bobby Moynihan)and the other is a guy she thinks "gets her" when she finds a book he has taken notes in and she finds them and him intriguing.  The only thing I didn't like about the film is the masturbatory scenes (there are 3 of them) included --- one time was more than enough.  Otherwise, it is right on most of the time for humor and real life situations, and I recommend it.

I give it 4.8 out of 5 stars

Movie #1005 ........................"Tammy"

Movie #1005 "Tammy" was just okay and a bit uneven.  There are very few comic masterpieces,  but make no mistake:  this is not one of these!    However, It IS  a vehicle for high -powered comic females to turn the tables. This time the loser is a female, but not just any female, but Melissa McCarthy who is able to annoy us one minute, but still win us over by the end of the movie.  The thing in Hollywood seems to be to pair her with a host of others --- well, in this film, it is Susan Sarandon playing her booze hound, pill popping, lustful grandmother.  Yep!  No kidding, and you know, as good as Susan is, she almost carries it off --- if the script didn't get in the way so much.  Then, there's Allison Janney playing Tammy's mom (not bad), Kathy Bates and Sandra Oh playing a lesbian couple (hard to believe, but they pull that off) and finally Toni Collette playing the woman who breaks up Tammy's marriage (not enough of her).  Lots of jokes kind of make a sound as they "thud" but I kept thinking how I feel audiences would have accepted this film more if it didn't have the role reversal.....when it is a boozer loser male in a film, people go in droves to support it and call the film "brilliant" (like "Hangover"), but it seems when it is a female, they give it 34% on rotten tomatoes.  So I have mixed emotions about this one --- it's too raunchy for most people I know, but if you don't mind raunchiness, and you're up for some funny discussions once in a while between very capable female comics, maybe you want to tune in.  But it isn't necessary to see this film.
