Movie #265 ........................."I Am Love"

Movie #265 "I Am Love" with Tilda Swinton is very stylish but for nought, in my opinion. It's the typical story of a repressed female wife who seems to have everything except her sexual freedom, until she meets "the one" who can change her life --- in this one it's Tony, the chef. She falls in love with the food that he makes, the way that he cooks and finally the man himself, an act that brings the downfall of her family ---- the movie is beautiful but pretentious --- it's so detailed that you keep thinking that it's building to something great, but it never does. So then when you think back, it just seems to be a movie devoid of a good story, but full of beautiful filmic moments. Some critics are raving about this one --- I'd rave about Tilda's acting, but not the film. There are other movies as stylish that have a better story --- say, like "Atonement" --- rent that one, instead.

I gave it 3 stars

Oscar winner Tilda Swinton shows off her multilingual skills in this Italian melodrama, in which family dissension, unbidden desire and other tensions bubble to the surface during the patriarch's birthday party. When the seemingly picture-perfect Recchi family gathers at the family manse to celebrate the great old man, the veneer of civility falls quickly away in director Luca Guadagnino's lush, atmospheric film.
