Movie $257 "Designing Woman" I watched on TCM this a.m. when I couldn't sleep and found it quite enjoyable. Rarely do we see Gregory Peck getting laughs, but I was almost on the floor in a scene where he was surreptitiously trying to retrieve his shoe from a dog's mouth! Lauren Bacall is kind of stiff (so is Peck, usually), but she sure can wear fashionable clothes well, and since she is a fashion designer (and Audrey Hepburn wasn't available, I assume), Bacall is okay. They have a cute courtship, the conflict is there but needs a little help with the mafia who is after Peck threatening to kill him (such trauma is rarely found in a light romantic comedy), but it has a rip roaring fight scene at its highpoint that ends up with a dancer creaming them all! You have to see the movie just for that moment! hah! It's fun, it's Peck, so I recommend it.

But the honeymoon comes to an abrupt end when they return to New York and must contend with their exes, angry mobsters … and the fact that they're practically strangers. This nuanced comedy, directed by Vincente Minelli, earned an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay.
