Movie #848........................."Frances Ha"

Movie #848 "Frances Ha"  -- Okay, so I'm trying to get prepped for the Spirit Awards, which occur the day before the Academy Awards, and this movie is up for best picture --- and it goes against "12 Years a Slave" --- yeah, right.   Something is quite wrong here.  First, I find it hard to believe "12 Years a Slave" should be in the independent film festival, but I guess it follows all the guidelines.......I guess how much money is spent on it really doesn't make it an indie or not.  But, for darn sure, the scope of "12 years a slave" is way broad, and usually when you use the word "indie" that's not the case, as is here in this film.  This film screams "indie" from the first minute.  It has the indie feel --- "slice of life" picture, where you, the viewer, search for the point of the thing --- sometimes it occurs and it knocks your socks off (successful indie films) and sometimes, it doesn't but the characters were good anyway, so you don't mind all that much (this one) and sometimes it misses entirely and you wonder why you ever had this one on your list ......Well, I have to say this one was better than others I've seen this year (and being a judge at the Naperville film festival, I have seen hundreds).  But, oh the gaps....it was really hard to stay awake.  Now, sometimes that is my fault, BUT I usually go back and fill in the gaps because by the end of the film, it has gripped me enough to go back and piece it together, but in this case.....not so much.  I called it a night and turned it off.  If it is a good enough film, and warrants higher than a 3, the film needed to draw me in, and this one didn't.  The film didn't seem to have a plan, and I know that is much like this character, but after awhile it got tedious.  I was disappointed in this because if you look at the plot summary below, it sounds like I could sooooo identify with this main character --- she has a dream of dancing and not the talent --- that is sooooo me!  and I like Greta Gerwig --- she seems to always come across so natural, but this film never drew me in that much, so I can't really recommend it for much.  Comedy?  not so much, good love story?  not so much.....good film?  not so much.   And not sure why it is nominated.  Maybe a breath of fresh air?  Maybe, but I didn't take to it much.  I'll find my breaths of fresh air elsewhere, thank you.

Frances Ha2012R86 minutes      I gave it 3 stars out of 5
Determined to make it as a modern dancer in New York, Frances pursues her unlikely goal with more enthusiasm than natural talent. The rest of the time, she and her sardonic best friend, Sophie, put off growing up for as long as they can.
