Movie # 1053 ........................."Veronica Guerin"

Movie #1053 "Veronica Guerin" is a very emotional biopic film about a hero in Dublin (yes, another Irish film, but this one was the best of the bunch I saw this time around).  It is, indeed, a thriller -- it starts at the very ending of the story and then goes back, and that set up works well.  We meet all the major kingpins for the drug trade in Dublin, we see the needle strewn streets with the little kids picking them up and playing with them, and we are disgusted as she is that this is happening.  We follow her first undercover, covert investigation, but then it becomes quite overt and loud and in the press, until she starts to get physical attacks on her house  and on her family and herself.  The ending is very powerful, and through the final song and written words, you learn the legacy of this Dublin heroine.  Cate Blanchett truly lights up the screen in this one with strong support from her mother played by Brenda Fricker.  I recommend it.

Based on a true story, director Joel Schumacher's brisk thriller stars Cate Blanchett as unrelenting Irish journalist Veronica Guerin, whose single-minded investigation of Dublin's underground drug trade gives rise to shocking consequences.
