Movie #887 "Divergent" --- went to see this by myself today because I had read the book , and even though I thought it was quite violent, I wanted to see what Hollywood did to the movie, and I found it quite entertaining and thought provoking. Don't get me wrong --- this isn't deep; I'm just saying that it has a theme that it hits on, and it's pretty basic: We can't segment people like this without losing the essence of the individual. And, of course, like so many science fiction books/films before it, the story exposes basic tactics of getting power, like segmenting the population into houses and then never letting them talk to each other. (sounds like "Hunger Games" and a lot of other sic fi books/films, doesn't it?) I liked the book, too, when it conveyed these points. So how different is the book from the movie? I read the book about a year ago, and though I could remember basic characters and plot turns today while I watched the movie, I'm not the expert to tell you the exact differences. Mine will be general comments -- I wasn't married so much to the book that I would find the nitty gritty differences, but what I did notice is that there was less violence (less fighting to be a Dauntless) in the film , and that less amount of violence I really appreciated. Another thing I enjoyed is watching the city of Chicago as a major character in this first book of this trilogy.....the train, the major buildings, etc. .and finally, I found the story to be so much easier to follow when I can see what is happening. I don't know what it was with this author, but I found it difficult to follow the amount of characters in this franchise, in comparison to the "Hunger Games" ---- and also to follow all the fighting/action scenes. So watching them brought them more to light for me. Overall, I would recommend this film --- I don't know what the critics are ranking it down for, except that it doesn't follow the book religiously. I didn't much mind that (like I said above), and I felt it had a story that was full of twists and turns and a good strong theme. Yeah, there's some melodrama --- there's stuff to laugh at while watching it (for example, when "4" took his shirt off on screen, the women in my audience made an audible gasp --- come on!~) But really what more could you ask for in an action film? I guess I have a low bar when it comes to that genre.
Divergent2014NR I would give it 4 stars out of 5
