Movie #1064 "Second Mother" was a very slow moving film, and in that way a very typical indie movie. The arc of the film could have been a tad clearer, because in the high point, there's a big scene where she is walking in a pool, and the audience knows it is a big moment, but I wasn't sure what motivated her to get there. Also, I wondered through the whole film why the father was in the movie --- and I wanted the editing to be crisper because some scenes went on and on and on for no apparent reason. I guess right away when I saw the picture of the little boy where the story was going....but what I did like is the frame we watch through, esp. when the mother is dealing with the man of the house --- when he asks her to bring ice cream, or to clear the table, we see it from her point of view --- only through the doorway of the dining room. She has to act a certain way, and that seemed reasonable to me, but then when the daughter comes and questions these supposed rules, we can see her side and see her treatment being unfair. Nice subject matter and very easy to understand the conflict, and I liked that most of all! This was the third movie we saw in one day at the Milwaukee Film Festival 2015. And the one I least liked.
The Second Mother I gave this 3 stars out of 5
