Movie #499 ........................."His Girl Friday"
Movie #499 "His Girl Friday" -- okay, so this year I went to Timeline and saw "The Front Page" and it was good, but not near as good as this version of the same story. Why? It was turned into a romantic screwball comedy that works. how? by changing one of the characters (Hildy Johnson) to a woman from a man. Then, you add speed to the lines so there's no dragging (like in the stage play) and make it sexual banter and voila----you have one of the best screwball comedies of all time. If you haven't seen this, you need to ---esp. if you ordinarily don't like romantic comedies. This is a must see! And they show it uninterrupted quite regularly on my favorite channel TCM! which only has a few more days of its "one actor per day in August" programming. yesterday was Cary Grant, today Joan Crawford, and the list goes on! check it out this week!

His Girl Friday
(1940) NR
Hildy Johnson (Rosalind Russell) is about to get hitched to dull insurance agent Bruce Baldwin (Ralph Bellamy) -- that's if her ex-husband, ruthless newspaper publisher Walter Burns (Cary Grant), doesn't succeed in winning her back in this battle-of-the-sexes screwball comedy. Meanwhile, reporters salivating for the scoop on a local voting conspiracy is just a minor distraction as Burns pulls out all the stops for the woman he loves.
