Movie #368 "The Fighter" Okay, I have to admit, I was not looking forward to this movie --- my attitude was: not another fight movie. How could it be better than "Raging Bull" which to me defines the genre? I usually sit through fight films and end up hating them because of the gratuitous violence I think they exhibit. But, of course, that's what fighting films are supposed to be on, so then I tell myself that it's my fault, what did I expect? and why do people find movies about such violence so exciting? blah, blah, blah. It's the same dialogue with myself, and I last had it when I saw the wrestler. The staple gun scene pretty much did me in. The acting in these films is usually good, don't get me wrong. But I just don't want to see another film on the prize fighting world, because I don't really care about it. I don't get the passion about it. Enough said on that. Then, this one comes along, and I really wasn't going to see it, but I saw the Charlie Rose interview, and it piqued my interest. Mark Wahlberg trained for this for 12 years? Christian Bale lost weight again for this movie and was willing to work for a director that snubbed him earlier when he wanted to do a movie called three kings? Amy Adams is playing a foul mouthed girlfriend, without makeup? Melissa Leo, touting a blonde wig and huge Boston accent as the fighter's overprotective, pushy mom? Well, I'm glad I saw it because there's much to like. First, it was amazing to watch both Wahlberg and Bale don their roles ---- when you see the real brothers at the end of the film, you appreciate how spot on both these actors are - Amy Adams and Melissa Leo get across their characters who are so different from their previous work in film, that I hardly recognized them. There were few fight scenes (hooray) and the ones in here, the audience was privy to most of the strategy so we could actually follow the fight instead of just go "ooh" when they were hit! The story, acting, editing/cinematography were all excellent, and it looked truly collaborative. And what a story --- it's as much about family ties as it is about the fightworld-------- I'm glad I went to see it, and I'm here to say that it isn't just another fight movie.
I give it 4 stars

Movie #367 ........................."The Black Swan"
Movie #367 "The Black Swan" is the Natalie Portman vehicle that just might win her an oscar --- she's that good in it. And it is all her! Oh, she's supported well by Barbara Hershey (mom) and Mila Kunis (her all- about -eve- rival), but she's the one you can't take your eyes off of --- she's the one that does most of her dancing --- she's the one that baffles you as you watch her character unfold and destroy itself as her life unravels in front of you. It's a hard movie to watch (which is why I didn't give it a 5 ---- there are some sex scenes in it that are VERY uncomfortable to sit through ----- can't imagine doing them in front of film crews!) , but what it is able to do is have a huge audience sit through ballet scene after ballet scene and sit on the edge of one's seat! That's amazing in itself. I don't think anyone who ever watches this film will ever say again that ballet is boring, because the director is able to keep your attention throughout. A psychological thriller in the ballet world ! Imagine that! and not one car scene. Hats off to Aronofsky! and Natalie Portman, I have thought you were amazing since I saw you in a little film called "Beautiful Girls" and made my hubby Dave sit through all your scenes with Tim Hutton (while I sped through the rest of that film). I have been wowed by you in almost everything you have done, and I think this one might be the one that cinches it for you! It's a wow wow performance!

Movie #366 ........................."Holiday Inn"
Movie #366 "Holiday Inn" is NOT one of my favorite of the season..far from it, really. To be honest, I never could get all the way through it, so I decided to sit down and watch it once and for all. I finally figured out what I didn't like about it, in comparison to say "Wonderful Life," "White Christmas," "Christmas Story," "Elf," or "Bells of St. Mary's." Weak story (the love story is so hot and cold that by the end, I was saying ----Fred Astaire got that girl? geez!), weak on good songs (okay, so White Christmas is in it, but it's sung by a nonsinger (in my opinion) and I don't mean Crosby ---- in White Christmas Clooney sings it with him --- a huge step up!), hugely weak on good dancing partners for Astaire (totally obvious), dumb storyline (let's put on a show but just for the holidays --- and let's try to celebrate George Washington's b-day with a toe tapping good show! Ridiculous), weak on comedy (it sorely needs Danny Kaye!) ...........it's just weak, weak, weak. It would get a two from me, but Hey, Astaire is in it and the fireworks number for the 4th of July is one of the best of his --------too bad it's in this dumb movie. Sorry, fans of Holiday Inn, but check out White Christmas instead. It has an Inn, it has Bing Crosby, it has Vera Ellen (if you you don't have Astaire, she isn't a bad alternative), it has snow, and it has tons more laughs and heart!

Movie #365 ........................."How Do You Know"
Movie #365 "How Do You Know" I saw because it was a romantic comedy (my favorite genre) and it was directed by James L. Brooks. The movie was too pushed in it style of acting ---- the more than capable actors were working too hard, and it was noticeable. The flow was start and stop, start and stop ---- and so the film came across kind of uneven to me. I found it enjoyable in that it tried to surprise the audience many times --- and with me, it was successful in that area, but what I got out of it is all surmising --------I'm thinking the answer to how do you know is just that you do --------you end up with someone who gets you -----and I guess that goes for the film, too. You would really, really appreciate it if you got it more than I did. I just thought it was entertaining, and that's it. And that's because I find all three of the leads so good: Reese Witherspoon, Paul Rudd and Owen Wilson. Jack Nicholson has never been a favorite of mine --- I always think he chews up the scenery, and he sure did here. no doubt.

Movie #364........................."Tron: Legacy"
Movie #364 "Tron : Legacy" I have to admit a couple of things. One is that I really only saw this movie because one of our ohs theatre alums worked on it, and his name was to be in the credits, and two, I usually don't expect much from movies that are overloaded with visual effects. That being said, I enjoyed the movie, but I found the story line kind of silly (along with a lot of the dialogue) It seemed a retread of Star Wars and almost every other science fiction chase movie. What I really liked about it is the strong female, and the black/white sets and costumes of the grid. I guess I expected the film to be smarter --- to point out that the reason people do well on the grid is because they know and understand the basics of video games --- but I never got that sense, so I guess they knew how to get out of situations because they've seen earlier movies? Hats off, though, to the visual effets people, especially our own Erich Hauptmann! It is really amazing the world they have created here!

Movie #363 ........................."Tortilla Soup"
Movie #363 "Tortilla Soup" was just so so. I guess with the cast I was expecting something more spectacular. This is a remake, I think, of an Ang Lee film "Eat, Drink, Man Woman" and the first is sooooo much better (different ethnicity has nothing to do with it). This looked like a made-for-t.v. movie. It should be shown juxtaposed with Ang Lee's original in a film class, and then students can make a list of what a good director does in comparison to a not-so-good one. When a film makes Elizabeth Pena look like a mediocre actress, something is wrong, in my opinion. Truth be told, I fell asleep in the middle, woke up at the end and filled in the blanks --- but then, I went back and saw what actually happened, and I wasn't off by much at all. Predictable, not very funny, but full of lots of beautiful shots of Hector Elizondo concocting good food. But that isn't worth it to me to watch it again, or recommend it. I'd skip it and see Ang Lee's film --- much better fare (foodwise and filmwise).

Movie #362 ........................."Kicking and Screaming"
Movie #362 "Kicking and Screaming" I sought out because 1) I've liked the other Noah Baumbach films like the recently watched "Greenburg" and 2) I was looking up the star of another movie I really liked "Outsourced," and he happens to be in this film, as well --- his name is Josh Hamilton, and I found him likable again in this movie, which isn't near as good as outsourced, though. However, Baumbach has an ease about him, a realism in his delivery, no matter what the environment, and this time it's a college campus. Don't cringe because it wasn't all drinking and drugs (like the infamous Dazed and Confused), but it actually dealt with intelligent people who were scared with the "what next?" question. I found it charming, oftentimes very funny, disrespectful, intuitive, and just plain entertaining. I gave it a 4 because, like all Baumbach films, it meanders a bit --- but other than that, I liked it a lot. Although it won't give many new college graduates the answers, it does offer the reasons why it is so scary to take the next step. The film lets all of us realize that it is those rites of passages that we all share --- and sometimes we need to be reminded of that. Oh, and P.S., the queen of indie films is in this --- the one and only Parker Posey. "End of Scene!"

Movie #361 ........................."Cashback"
Movie #361 "Cashback" is a very well done indie romantic comedy. I'm always a sucker for the first person narrative, and this guy Sean (whom I have never seen before) is very winning, so it was easy to fall into the story. It takes its time to develop a relationship with this girl that he works with, but really paints from "afar" --- the only negative that I had, and one that prevented it from being a 4 or over for me, was that it uses this stop action/freeze frame technique --- it is part of the plot, but I didn't buy into that idea, and it just seemed to slow the story down to a dead standstill. This is a big film on being dumped and feeling alone and having trouble sleeping as a result of it. And with all the stopped action, I kind of chucked to myself when I thought that this movie might cure the sleeplessness that comes from a big break up. But it isn't that bad at all --- just the stop action scenes. And if you are watching it on a dvd player or your t.v. (streaming) you can cure that with a press of a button. Wish we could cure the bad feelings one gets from a breakup as easily! Maybe watching this film might help.

Movie #360 ........................."Noel"
Movie #360 "Noel" is a nice "made for t.v." - like movie for Christmas time. Unlike made for t.v movies, it has a stellar cast of Susan Sarandon, Penelope Cruz, and Robin Williams (who for some reason is uncredited) --- but the pace is slow, every minute is directed as melodramatic and poignant, and the director would be so darn disappointed if you didn't get a lump in your throat by the end of the film. For that reason, it got a 3 from me, but I really did like the acting and what it said. There should be more movies about the problems with being too jealous ---- and about people who experience the Christmas season alone. If those two topics look intriguing to you, you'll want to see this very christmassy film.

Movie #359 ......................."Burlesque"
Movie #359 "Burlesque" was a big shock to me. I had looked it up on rotten.tomatoes (of course) before taking a small group to it (the calendar girls), and I was not surprised that 30 percent of critics disliked the movie; however, the big surprise is that 70 percent of the audience liked it ---- a huge difference, so I wanted to see it because of the controversy. I really liked this. Of course, the movie has been done before (what hasn't, if you have seen a lot of movies?), and some of the dialogue is a bit stagey, but here are the positives: it has Cher (and we rarely get to see her in movies anymore --- she used to be really, really good acting --- I'm not raving about her acting here, but you get to see her perform 2 numbers, and she's terrific in both of them --- and I'm guessing we'll get to see her sing a song at the academy awards this February, the songs are that good!); the movie has Stanley Tucci, and who doesn't like him? he keeps it real! And then, there's an amazing performance by Christina Aguilera, whom, I have to admit, I have never really heard/seen perform, that I knew of. When she takes over the stage, she really takes over the stage --- and her voice is a lot like a younger Cher, so that was fun to watch the mentor/mentee play out in the film ---- there's obvious a rapport/respect between the two singers, and that's fun to watch. One more kudo goes the lighting ---- the powers that be in this film got ,oh,just the great Broadway team of Fisher/Eisenhower (who did Chicago and everything else that has ever been really good on Broadway, so far) to light this movie --- so, it is worth it to see a film lit well. And one more thing --------it is clean! seriously, I had heard about Aguilera being , well, not a good role model for kids, but the movie is very clean, well, for a movie on burlesque --- women are hardly in their clothes and they gyrate around (like flashdance) but It takes several minutes in for a first kiss, and then the love scenes fade to black, so you could take teen girls and they would love the musical numbers ---- which are the best parts of the film. So, yes, I recommend it. There's a song toward the end that Cher sings about not having seen the last of her, and I hope we haven't!

Movie #358 ........................."Love and Other Drugs"
Movie #358 "Love and Other Drugs" is an Ed Zwick film, and I've been a Zwick fan for a long time, so I had to see this one. I liked it but not as much as I thought I would. The characters are winning enough, but the opening 1/2 of the film (or more) is really force fed to the audience ---- everyone comes on too strong ---- a little too cutesy, a little too noisy, a little too much for someone like me who wants honesty ---------perhaps, that was done on purpose because most everyone is putting everyone on, and the world Jamie travels in (selling drugs legally) isn't too honest with its products, either. There's lots of sex and drugs in the film (which is really different for Zwick), but it didn't seem gratuitous because the film's focus is on the building of a relationship, and in this day and age, well, things have changed, and since their relationship starts out as just sex, you can see why the film uses it quite a bit. Anne Hathaway is so good, she is able to take Jake G. with her beyond the lines in many scenes, which is good because the script has some problems. However, I DO recommend it for its risktaking -------let's face it, romance films have very little variety, but this one seems on speed ---- the tempo is different, and so I valued that the director was trying to do something different here.

Movie #357 ......................."Unstoppable"
Movie #357 "Unstoppable" is a nail biter; Tony Scott knows how to direct the action thriller, and Denzel Washington knows how to infuse just enough humor, seriousness, and emotions to keep it going without getting derailed (excuse the pun). What I didn't like about this film was that it doesn't explain enough all the train terms so that we, the audience, can more easily follow it and be even more frightened about the whole situation. All of that aside, I liked it and recommend it. It is done well----I was yelling out to the screen quite a bit during the movie --- I was that involved!

Movie #356........................."Bridge to Terabithia"
Movie #356 "Bridge to Terabithia" I liked a lot, mostly due to the two very capable young actors. After seeing this, I looked up the two kids and their long list of projects is quite commendable (the girl was the Winn-Dixie girl and she even sings one of the songs in the closing --- very talented) (the boy was an actor I especially liked in the recent "Kids Are All Right" film I saw) The story was okay --- I don't usually like this genre, but the two actors were so good, and the subtext of being bullied by other kids was so universal that I bought it. I can see where the subject matter might be a bit disturbing for younger kids (deals with death), but it has a very powerful ending that all kids should see some time in their lifetime. I'm sorry I didn't see it earlier, but thankful I got to see it at all! Beautifully photographed, to boot!

Movie #355 ........................."The Breaking Upwards"
Movie #355 "The Breaking Upwards" concerns two people who figure a detailed way to break up correctly --- but it's really full of honest scenes about a relationship between two people who seem to be in love, but bored with their relationship. There are some honest answers to some honest questions here, and the paretns are good, as well. For an independent film, it has a pretty good cast of famous people in it. This is one of those films where the writers are both the leads, the male lead is the director and the editor and the female lead wrote all the lyrics to all the songs in the film. Very talented people, and I'm glad my niece suggested it ---- it especially has a powerful ending. Hope you get to see it, esp. if you've gone through a tough breakup, or are contemplating one.

Breaking Upwards
2009NR 89 minutes
Breaking up is painful -- but does it have to be? Subdued individually by their relationship yet scared of life apart, Zoe Lister Jones and Daryl Wein set out to meticulously orchestrate and manage their split into painlessness in this indie comedy. The New York couple's struggles attain an extra air of authenticity as they expose -- pretty much uncensored -- every bit of their four-year, complex and codependent union for audiences to witness.
Cast:Zoe Lister Jones, Daryl Wein, Julie White, Andrea Martin, Peter Friedman, La Chanze, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Olivia Thirlby, Pablo Schreiber, Heather Burns Director:Daryl Wein Genres:Comedy, Romantic Comedies, Indie Comedies, Indie Romance This movie is:Romantic Format:DVD and streaming (HD available)

Movie #354 ........................."Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part I"
Movie #354 "Harry Potter & the Deathly Hallows, Part I" is one of the best of the whole series (my very favorites are Prisoner of Azkaban and Order of the Phoenix), ranking 3rd with me. It is very dark, though (but not full of as many deaths as Nick Degilio suggested on WGN the other day). It's different than the others due to the use of more realistic settings, and the lack of adults in comparison to the "kids" (they aren't kids anymore, really, though) in the film ----It is mostly Harry Potter (except for maybe one or two scenes, he is on screen every minute). The story is one of the clearer ones of the series, so it's easy to follow even if you haven't read this one (which I haven't done, only one I haven't read of the series, but it's my next audio book I'm working on.) Well photographed, good sound, nice editing, I even jumped out of my seat once or twice --- can't beat an afternoon of entertainment like this, so I highly recommend it.

Movie #353 ........................."The Madness of King George"
Movie #353 "The Madness of King George" concerned a king in history I knew little about --- I had no idea that King George (the one we beat in the Revolutionary War) had dementia and what the people around him tried to do to him. Wow! It was a real eye opener, and the film was well acted with Helen Mirren playing his wife, and Rupert Evert playing his son (very funny part). There were things I couldn't always follow in the film (wish I knew more details about the history of the times), but what I learned in the film was well worth the time it took to watch this.

The Madness of King George
(1994) PG-13
The dementia of King George III -- the English monarch who lost the war to keep the American colonies -- ignites a flurry of political and familial treachery in this comical biopic that earned Nigel Hawthorne and Helen Mirren a pair of Oscar nods. Based on Alan Bennett's play, the film provides insight into the primitive medical practices of the time and co-stars Ian Holm, Rupert Graves and Rupert Everett.
